Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarship

The undergraduate scholarship has traditionally been the backbone of the Foundation—the primary reason the Foundation was first set up. Intended to benefit Malaysian students from low-income families, the Foundation believes that providing scholarships is about providing opportunities – giving a chance for students to have the higher education necessary to come into their own and be the next generation of leaders and captains of industries.

In 2014, the Foundation expanded its scholarship offering to include an education development programme for low-income students from challenging backgrounds who have obtained 3As and above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations. The ROAR – Reach Out and Rise - Education Development programme will provide full tuition fees, room, board, and an intensive enrichment programme to selected scholars to enable them to complete tertiary-level education in selected diploma courses, which, upon completion of pre-requisites, will lead to degree courses. This programme is intended for students who are academically-inclined but are from at-risk and highly impoverished backgrounds, and who have the interest and desire to succeed academically through a structured support programme. [This programme is not intended for high-scoring SPM leavers who are better suited for STPM or Foundation courses, which lead directly to degree programmes.]

To ensure success in this current social and economic environment where a degree does not often equate with employment or an ability to be entrepreneurs, we have also set up the following for both types of scholarship programmes:

  • Enrichment Programmes that provide additional life skills to our scholars. These programmes are aimed to instil motivation, confidence, self-belief and our Group Values to ensure that our Hong Leong Scholars are that much more competitive in the working world;
  • Structured Internship Programmes with Group companies. Internships are deemed critical by educational institutions and prospective employers in ensuring that students graduate into the workforce with sufficient knowledge and relevant experience; and
  • Scholars’ Club which aims to provide the scholars with continuous support throughout (and after) their studies. Various activities are being planned to ensure constant engagement with the scholars.

More than RM 3,000,000 is allocated each year for scholarship grants for both these programmes. We strongly and actively encourage students living with disabilities to apply.
